Unbeaten run put to the test at 7:30 p.m. tonight at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park
Following a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution on Saturday, Sporting Kansas City will look to continue a club record 13-game unbeaten run when they host Real Salt Lake Wednesday night at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT with live television coverage on KSMO beginning at 7:00 p.m. CT.
Sporting Kansas City leads the all-time series against Salt Lake with a record of 5-4-3 since the sides first squared off in 2005. Three of those wins have come athome, where Sporting Kansas City holds a 3-1-2 advantage over their WesternConference counterparts.
This is the first meeting between the two sides in 2011. Last season, Sporting Kansas City dropped a 4-1 decision to Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on May 29th, 2010 before earning a 1-1 draw at home on August 7th.
Real Salt Lake (9-4-6), currently sitting in fifth place in the Western Conference, enter Wednesday night’s contest following a 2-0 loss at home to the Columbus Crew on Saturday. The loss to the Crew snapped a seven-match unbeaten streak for Salt Lake in MLS regular season play.
Heading into Wednesday’s clash, both teams have substantial worries on the injury front. For Real Salt Lake, 2010 MLS Defender of the Year Jamison Olave is out after suffering a left MCL sprain in the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game last week at Red Bull Arena. Joining Olave on the injury list are midfielders Javier Morales and Nelson Gonzalez along with goalkeeper Kyle Reynish. Midfielder Ned Grabavoy and forward Paulo Jr. are both listed as doubtful with left hamstring strains, while defender Tony Beltran is listed as questionable with a left calf strain.
For Sporting Kansas City, captain Davy Arnaud will be out after recently undergoing successful sports hernia surgery, while midfielder Craig Rocastle is still rehabbing his right knee following a sprain suffered while playing for Grenada at this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. Aurelien Collin will also miss out following the announcement last week that the defender has suffered a non-displaced fracture of the transverse process of both the L2 and L3 vertebrae in his lumbar spine. Defender Korede Aiyegbusi is listed as out with a concussion.
Tickets for the match are still available, and can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com or at the LIVESTRONG Sporting Park box offices. KSMO will air a 30-minute pre-game show hosted by play-by-play announcer Callum Williams, in addition to the weekly soccer show on KSMO, ‘Off the Pitch’ with Sporting Kansas City, on Sunday at 9:30 p.m. CT.
Fans are encouraged to arrive to LIVESTRONG Sporting Park as early as possible on Wednesday. Prior to the match, ‘Quiet Corral’ will perform in the Sprint Plaza as part of the Live at LSP concert series. Visit SportingKC.com for more information on Saturday’s match.
